April 5, 2020

Dear Parents, The 7th and 8th grade team wanted to communicate our schedules and policies for this period of remote learning. As you know, the state has issued some guidelines for learning in this unique situation. We anticipate your child spending about half the time on task as he or she usually would in the classroom setting. This averages about 30 minutes a day per subject. A few brief notes about our policies going forward:

  • Students will be held accountable for all of the assigned work. Any work turned in during the past two weeks will be counted as extra credit toward the 2nd trimester grades. Going forward, all work will be for 3rd trimester grading.
  • Assigned work for the week will be posted on Google Classroom by Monday morning, due by Saturday (end of day). Your child may choose to spread the work out differently depending on his/her schedule and the schedule in your household. We are hoping this flexibility is helpful.
  • All teachers will hold office hours. The format of the office hours for each teacher will be communicated to the students through Google Classroom. This is a period of time where a teacher is available to your child to answer any questions that he/she may have about the material. It may be via email or over video conferencing, depending on the situation. The schedule for office hours is attached.
  • Each 7th and 8th grade homeroom will hold Morning Meeting via Zoom on a weekly basis. This is a great time for the kids to see each other and talk about what is going on at home, in the world, etc. It is not related to academic work, but purely a social meeting for our Tisbury tigers. These are scheduled as follows:
    7Scho - Fridays 10:30-11:00
    8Leal - Fridays 11:00-11:30
    8Adamo - Fridays 11:30-12:00

We, as teachers, know that this is a stressful time for families. We are trying to lessen that by creating this structure and schedule of availability. If there is anything in particular your child needs, please email us. We are happy to reach out and help!

    Sincerely,
    7th /8th grade team

We are now going to begin a remote learning opportunity through the use of video communication. It is important that we continue to respect the privacy and intellectual property rights of our school community-our teachers and our students. By participating in remote learning today, you agree that you may not save, record, share or post this session or any photos from this session. You also agree that you will not save, record, share or post future sessions or any photos from future sessions. The rules in school apply to the remote classroom experience. Students must treat each other with respect during our time together and must obey school rules. If you or your parents do not agree to these rules, please disconnect from the session and contact the teacher to receive an alternative learning packet.

Curriculum When Attending Tisbury School Builiding

Welcome to 7th grade Science! It is primarily a life science curriculum. We begin the year with a study of life functions and cells, utilizing microscopes and looking at both living and non-living specimen. Our studies continue through the kingdoms, covering everything from microscopic bacteria to plants and animals. Another special unit for the 7th grade involves looking at watersheds, specifically in our neighborhoods.

Because we do quite a bit of lab work with partners, it will be extremely important for your child to practice safe lab procedures. This will maximize both learning and fun as we explore different concepts.

This year, Mrs. Leal, Mrs. Forrester and I decided that the students would utilize one binder for both math and science classes. We will issue one larger binder to be separated into sections. Hopefully, this will be easier for the kids to organize, maintain and carry! I do not need your child to come to school with any additional supplies for science.

I will assign homework on an as-needed basis. It is generally due the next day. All homework counts toward your child's quarter grade. I will post homework (and class activities) daily on the homework website. I will be assigning science IXLs as well, but not each week. Late assignments (homework and all others) lose 10 points per day. If your child is absent, he or she should check the website for work missed and see me upon returning to school.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concern. The best method is definitely email (sadamo@mvyps.org). If you would rather speak to me directly, please email me and I can call you after school or during a non-teaching period.

Leal, a Sra.

É geralmente devido no dia seguinte.

The 8th grade curriculum has a wider focus encompassing genetics, astronomy, chemistry, physics, geology and meteorology. Starting the 8h grade year with genetics ties the 7th grade curriculum with the 8th. After examining the role of genetics in the creation of life we then search for where life came from, hence the birth of our planet. Astronomy is then linked with chemistry as we explore the origin of our planet and the composition of it. Linked with the study of physics we examine planetary motion as well. Geology is then introduced as we explore the structure of the earth which entails in depth learning about minerals and rocks, the rock cycle, continental drift, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanism, weathering and erosion and soil formation.

Each year we utilize our garden plot. In early 7th grade our focus is on preparing the soil. We begin in the fall planting a cover crop which will help to hold our soil in place and add nitrogen to the soil. We begin a worm bin in the classroom to show how organic material enhances the nutrient levels of the soil. The biotic and abiotic factors involved in a garden soil then become apparent. In the spring we plant potato seed and keep an eye on the garden as the summer progresses. In the fall of 8th grade we harvest our crop and enjoy home fries while discussing the chemistry of nutrition and the genetic variation between ancient potato crops compared to what we have in todays super markets.
