Art at The Tisbury School

Students will investigate and explore with many art mediums and techniques in the classroom to increase and develop manipulative skills, observational skills, and expressive vocabulary. Originality and the communication of ideas are highly encouraged in the Art room.

Exposure to major Art movements, Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Modern art and the arts and crafts movement will be explored. Cultural, Historical Arts and Vineyard history will be reviewed and celebrated.

Many of the art lessons overlap with the academic subjects to provide an integrated learning experience. A few examples would be the Greek inspired ceramic pots and Egyptian 3-Dimensional projects that coincide with seventh grade Social Studies. The fifth grade color theory ratios are a prelude to ratios covered in the math department in sixth grade.

Overall, students are encouraged to strive to be their best, use their imagination, and work hard towards their goals

Kindergarten Art will focus on exploration, use of imagination, drawing skills and appreciation of art. Students will be introduced to a variety of materials and begin to develop an understanding of line, color, texture, pattern, form, shape and design.

First grade will continue with developing their understanding of the visual arts through the basic elements with more challenging drawing and sculptural projects. How to care for, use and clean up materials is stressed as well as appropriate classroom behavior. The curriculum follows along with their classroom studies in relation to history, cultures, animals, and concepts.

Second grade students build on basic skills, correct use of equipment, andpractice safety, sharing, and respect for materials. Emphasis on creativity and exploration through lessons in clay, painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, crafts, and map making.

Third grade students have lots of projects to push the imagination! Projects include- Native American inspired lessons, vineyard history with "scrimshaw' whale teeth, ceramic fish bowls, presidential portraits and many drawing and painting lessons involving nature andanimals.

Fourth grade students continue to develop drawing and manipulative skills with a variety of media. Ancient civilizations, animal biomes, famous artists throughout history and the solar system will be all explored.

The Fifth through Eighth grade curriculum is a balance of traditional fine arts and craft in many mediums, with respect to the elements and fundamentals of Art.

Students will be introduced to more technical drawing skills, like perspective drawing and value studies. They will explore more challenging sculptural projects, printmaking, paper marbleizing, sgraffito clay techniques, and mural design. Attitude is paramount with a focus on striving to best the best you can be!
