Tisbury School counselors are a part of your child's educational team and embrace a developmental model of student-based activities to promote positive social/emotional, academic, and developmental growth. Health/guidance curriculum is offered through classroom lessons.

Some Topics Are:

  • Growth & Development and Proper Hygiene (5th and 6th grade)
  • Proper Nutrition
  • Making and maintaining friendships
  • Self-Awareness and managing feelings
  • Healthy coping strategies and handling stress
  • Understanding Stereotypes and Respectful Relationships (CONNECT to End Violence program 7th and 8th grade)
  • Conflict resolution, social problem-solving and decision-making
  • Understanding and resisting peer pressure
  • Anti-Bullying and Cyberbullying Education
  • High school transition planning (8th grade)
  • Substance abuse education and resistance (D.A.R.E program in 6th grade)
  • Team building activities (ROPES course in 8th grade)
  • Camp Alton Jones outdoor environmental education (6th grade)
  • AIDS/HIV education (7th and 8th grade)

    Individual and small group counseling varies based on student needs. Typically it focuses on social problem solving, divorce/separation, anxiety, grief support, self esteem, study skills, and other developmentally appropriate issues. School Counselors collaborate with community agencies and outside therapists to assist families with counseling referrals and additional resources. Counselors chair Child Study Team meetings and consult regularly with teachers and support specialists to plan and support the personal, social/emotional, and academic well-being of students.
