5th grade provides students with the opportunity to further develop leadership, academic, and social skills. Course work in math and science are often designed as a path to practice the skills of real work that they will do in the world. A focus on collaborative learning, respect, self awareness, and empathy allow students to continue to grow as compassionate individuals in the Tisbury community.

Academic learning includes investigating operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base 10, fractions, measurement and data analysis, geometry, physical science, life science, Earth/space science, and engineering. Student learning is based on the Massachusetts math and science frameworks while simultaneously focusing on how to problem solve and work cooperatively. Through this lens, the class explores a wide variety of topics.

The class focuses on inquiry based science and critical thinking in collaborative lab groups. Math in Focus, based on Singapore Math, involves multimodal interactions of all math curricula. The ultimate goal is to instill a love of learning, scientific inquiry, and math fluency, while also providing students with practical strategies for working relationships as citizens in diverse communities.
