Welcome to Literacy Workshop - Grades 5-8
Goals of Literacy Workshop:
- to provide extra reading and learning support for improving reading skills that will deepen understanding of fiction and informational text
- to cultivate and maintain a life-long love and appreciation of reading
Students who receive support:
- Students are selected for small group instruction based on teacher recommendations as well as assessment scores from AimsWebPlus, ELA MCAS, HMH Reading Inventory, Informal Reading Inventory assessment and the Wilson Assessment of Encoding (WADE) test.
Meeting times and Curriculum:
- Literacy Workshop students in Grades 5-8 meet three times per week for 30 minutes each in small groups
- Depending on student's individual area of need, students receive one of two types of support. Some students practice and learn reading and learning strategies including practice with fluency (speed and accuracy). Other students receive lessons in the Wilson Reading System which focuses on decoding and spelling. Both approaches are designed to strengthen comprehension and vocabulary skills.
Independent reading:
- "the single activity that consistently correlates with high levels of performance on standardized tests of reading ability...is frequent, voluminous reading."
--Nancie Atwell, The Reading Zone
- Because independent reading on a regular basis is so important to strengthening comprehension and vocabulary skills, the ELA teachers for Grades 5-8 and I expect students to be reading for at least 20 minutes every night. What is most important is that they are reading a book that they have chosen which is at the right level for them and a genre that they enjoy.
