Welcome to 7th and 8th grade math! My name is Mrs. Leal. There are so many things I love about math, but my favorite thing about it is the many ways in which one can arrive at an answer. We are all unique; therefore, we think and solve problems differently. Everyone's ideas are respected and valued in my room. We often take time to see problem solving strategies through other people's perspectives, providing us with opportunities to gain a more complete understanding of the concept(s). Take some time to read the classroom routines and expectations below. Thanks for stopping by.

Homework is given on a daily basis. All homework should be written in the student planner the day it is assigned and should be completed before entering math class the day it is due. Homework will be graded for accuracy or completion, depending on the assignment.
Tests & Quizzes will be given on a regular basis to help guide instruction and check for understanding of the material. If students would like to improve a grade on a test or quiz, he or she may do corrections to earn partial credit. Corrections must be done independently outside of class time.
Participation in class is very important to a student's growth and understanding in mathematics. Contributing to class discussion, participating in partner and group work, and explaining the way in which one arrives at an answer are several ways to actively participate in math class.
Extra Help: My number one goal is to help students master 7th and 8th grade math. I am always available to help with homework, quiz/test corrections, or any other concerns before school, after school, during resource or during lunch/recess. Students may make an appointment during any of those times for extra help.
Absences and missed work: Making up any missed work due to absences is the students' responsibility. A student should see me before or after class to get the missed work and/or missed lesson.

In 7th grade math, students will:

  • Extend understanding of ratios and proportional relationships including percent, scale drawings, and unit rates.
  • Build upon understanding of fractions, decimals, and percent to fluently perform all operations with rational numbers, including negative numbers.
  • Write and solve expressions and equations with one variable.
  • Solve problems involving measurement of circles, surface area of 3D shapes, and angles formed by intersecting lines.
  • Compare two data distributions and address questions about differences between populations.
  • Begin working with random sampling and understand importance of representative samples for drawing inferences.

  • In 8th grade math, students will:

  • Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them using rational numbers.
  • Work with radicals and integer exponents.
  • Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
  • Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
  • Define, evaluate, and compare functions.
  • Use functions to model relationships between quantities.
  • Understand and solve problems involving congruence and similarity, Pythagorean Theorem, and real world mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.
  • Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.
