The Spanish program at the Tisbury School is a kindergarten through eighth grade curriculum. It focuses on acquisition of basic listening, speaking, and writing skills in the target language. Songs, games, books, videos and projects are used to teach and reinforce these skills along with familiar routines. In the classroom, students are introduced to common words and phrases and practice in a supportive and developmentally appropriate way. Comprehensible input supports this by allowing students to understand using pictures, motions, and familiar situations. It is an environment that strives to engage the student in a multi sensory approach allowing for students' various learning strengths and styles.

The program links 21st Century skills for the students. There is a focus on cross disciplinary skills, creative and collaborative experiences, utilization of technology, and global awareness. Students are given opportunities to explore and understand the rich and diverse cultures that speak the Spanish language throughout the world. Art, food, customs, and the language itself are ways that students can see similarities, differences, and even historical connections. There are opportunities for students to link learning in other classes to Spanish using science, social studies, and language arts to name a few. Technology gives students access to explore and express understanding. All in all, the Tisbury School's Spanish program is one that gives students an opportunity to obtain skills that can be further developed at the high school level and implemented in our ever expanding, global society.
